Consent on Close

What it is

Allows a banner close action (e.g., clicking the ✕ close icon) to be treated as a positive consent, equivalent to pressing the banner’s “Accept” button.

What happens when enabled

• When a visitor closes the banner, Cookie Compliance immediately:
  • Records consent at the current default Access Level and visible Purposes,
  • Stores the consent cookie (respecting your configured Duration),
  • Updates Autoblocking to allow permitted scripts/iframes/links, and
  • Sends updated signals to your integrations (Google / Microsoft / Facebook consent modes).

Note: “Close” refers to explicit close actions on the banner (e.g., clicking the close icon). Passive behaviors (e.g., timeouts) do not count.

Related settings that interact

• Default Consent Level — determines what will be stored if the user closes the banner.
• Duration — defines how long the stored consent remains valid.
• Autoblocking / Providers & Patterns — ensure categories map to what you intend to activate on consent.

Compliance note

Under GDPR, UK PECR, and POPIA, consent must be a freely given, affirmative action. Closing the banner is not an explicit choice, so keep Consent on Close disabled in these regions. It is only appropriate where consent is not legally required (for example, opt-out jurisdictions such as the US).
